Limestone is a common type of carbonate sedimentary rock. It is composed mostly different crystal forms of calcium carbonate. Limestone often contains fossils, and these provide scientists with information on ancient environments and on the evolution of life.
Limestone is strong, dense and contains few pores. Less pores make it harder for the stone to break and allow it to withstand abrasion and freeze-thaw.
